Rivière Rouge Cheese

In 1869, just a few short years after the Canadian Confederation of 1867, Canada purchased Rupert’s Land from the Hudson’s Bay Company, designated a Governor and immediately started surveying the land to create townships. The Métis people, who had no title to the land they had been occupying for generations did not take kindly to this intrusion: Louis Riel and his men wasted no time in taking Fort Garry (Winnipeg) and declaring a provisional government. The Red River Rebellion had begun. It is this historic event that inspired Agropur’s artisan cheesemakers to create this new semi-firm cheese.
