Providence : Divine guidance or care

The Trappist monks, founders of « La Trappe d’Oka », faced numerous hardships upon first settling in the region of Basses Laurentides, northwest of Montreal. Harsh weather, lack of resources, frequent fires and a lack of money threatened the survival of the religious order.

In 1893, providence appeared on the horizon in the person of master cheese maker Father Alphonse Juin who launched the wonderful Oka cheese whose success eased the congregation’s way of life.

The washed rind soft ripened cheese La Providence pays tribute to the faith that guided these pioneers during the most difficult moments of their history.
